Serie A side AC Milan have entered advanced negotiations with Bayer Leverkusen for the signing of Nigerian striker Victor Boniface on an initial loan deal with an option to buy, according to transfer expert Matteo Moretto.

Direct contacts were made with Leverkusen on Wednesday morning as Milan step up their pursuit of the 24-year-old forward before the transfer window closes. According to reports, Boniface has already expressed openness to joining the Rossoneri, which has accelerated discussions between both clubs.

While Boniface is not the only striker on Milan’s shortlist, sporting director Igli Tare is believed to be pushing hardest for his signing as head coach Massimiliano Allegri looks to add another number 9 to his attacking options, especially with Rafael Leao’s recent injury.

Milan have been exploring several centre-forward targets this summer but view Boniface as a player who fits Allegri’s system and could adapt quickly, possibly helped by the presence of Super Eagles teammate Samuel Chukwueze at San Siro.

Negotiations are expected to continue in the coming hours as both clubs work to strike an agreement before the transfer deadline.

Victor Boniface made 27 appearances for Bayer Leverkusen in all competitions last season, scoring 11 goals and registering one assist. In the previous campaign, he played a pivotal role in Leverkusen’s Bundesliga title triumph, contributing 21 goals and 9 assists in 34 matches.
