George Ilenikhena will make his senior Nigeria debut after earning a place in the Super Eagles’ starting XI against Madagascar in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Uyo, Bold Sports reports.
The 20-year-old Al-Ittihad forward received his first Super Eagles call-up for the September qualifiers. He enters the match after a strong start to the season in Saudi Arabia, with six goals and two assists in nine appearances across competitions.
Ilenikhena’s inclusion is the biggest talking point from Éric Chelle’s team. The youngster becomes one of the latest players to step into Nigeria’s senior setup. His first appearance comes in a competitive AFCON qualifier rather than a friendly.
The Super Eagles have also brought back several familiar names for their Group L opener.
Ilenikhena’s selection follows an impressive club spell with Al-Ittihad. His performances earned him recognition from CAF among the young players to watch during the AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign.
Before the match, the forward spoke about his excitement at representing Nigeria for the first time.
“It is an honour to be here. I am proud and happy to be part of this big national team, and for me, it’s a big deal,” he said.
He now gets the chance to turn that call-up into his first senior appearance.
Stanley Nwabali starts in goal after returning to the Super Eagles squad for the qualifiers. Ola Aina also returns to the starting lineup.
Calvin Bassey, Semi Ajayi, Bruno Onyemaechi and captain Wilfred Ndidi are among the established players selected by Chelle.
Alex Iwobi, Ademola Lookman and Samuel Chukwueze also start, adding further experience around the debutant.
Akor Adams completes the starting XI alongside Ilenikhena. Adams is already an established Nigeria international, having scored on his senior debut against Lesotho in October 2025.

Nigeria face Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday, September 25, with kick-off scheduled for 5pm Nigerian time.
