Bundesliga side Werder Bremen have been handed a timely boost with the return of Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface, who is edging closer to making his comeback after a lengthy injury layoff.

The Nigerian international has been sidelined for over three months due to a knee injury that required surgery in January. Following the procedure, Boniface returned to his parent club Bayer Leverkusen to undergo rehabilitation.

However, the 25-year-old has now rejoined Werder Bremen, as announced by the club on Monday, signaling significant progress in his recovery and raising hopes that he could feature again before the end of the season.

Back in January, Bremen had indicated that Boniface would play no further part in the campaign. His return to the club, though, suggests a potential rethink, with the striker now in contention to make an earlier-than-expected comeback.

“Victor will train individually for the entire week initially. Afterwards, he will be carefully reintroduced to team training, so that we hope he can still play this season,” explains Peter Niemeyer, Werder Bremen Head of Professional Football.

Boniface joined Bremen on loan from Bayer Leverkusen during the summer transfer window, but his time at the club has not lived up to expectations. Prior to his injury, he made 11 appearances for the club, registering two assists but failing to find the back of the net.

Despite his struggles in front of goal, Boniface remains a player of proven quality in the Bundesliga and will be eager to rediscover the form that established him as one of the league’s most dangerous forwards.

His return could prove crucial for Werder Bremen, who currently sit 14th in the table on 28 points, just four points above the relegation zone. With seven matches remaining, the club will be looking to secure vital results to steer clear of the drop.

As the season enters its crucial phase, Boniface’s recovery offers renewed optimism for both player and club in their fight for survival
