More than 20 schools are set to compete at the third edition of the The Athletics School Games, scheduled for March 20–21 at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex.
Since launching in 2024, TASG has emerged as one of Nigeria’s growing grassroots platforms for track and field, providing structured competition for children aged 4 to 16.
The event, initiated by Seun Akinbohun and registered with World Athletics, aims to nurture young talent while strengthening inter-school athletics programmes.
This year’s edition will feature sprints, middle-distance races and field events, with organisers introducing several structural changes to improve the competition format.

For the first time, primary school events will be separated from secondary school competitions, allowing for more races, improved scheduling and better recovery time for young athletes.
Organisers also say technical officiating, timing systems and event coordination have been upgraded as the competition continues to grow.
Beyond the races, TASG has positioned itself as a talent discovery platform, offering young athletes early exposure to competitive athletics and potential pathways for future development.
Sportsmanship remains another central focus of the Games. The competition promotes respect, fair play and discipline through initiatives such as the Kashopefoluwa Sportsmanship Award, which recognises athletes and schools that demonstrate integrity and positive conduct during the event.
Despite the competition’s growth, organisers say challenges remain. Funding and sponsorship have been limited, with much of the event self-financed, while infrastructure constraints mean equipment and facilities often have to be independently sourced.

Still, participation has continued to grow each year as interest in the competition increases within school athletics.
This year’s Games will also introduce new events including the 400m hurdles in the senior secondary category, while maintaining TASG’s core structure as a schools-only competition, with clubs and academies excluded to keep the focus on inter-school athletics development.
As preparations intensify, the third edition of TASG is expected to bring another round of emerging young talents to the track in Lagos.
