AS Monaco striker George Ilenikhena etched his name into UEFA Champions League history on Tuesday night, becoming the youngest African player to reach 15 appearances in the competition, surpassing a long-standing record held by Nigerian legend Kanu Nwankwo.

The milestone came in difficult circumstances, as Monaco were heavily beaten 6-1 by Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu. Ilenikhena was introduced for the final 17 minutes of the match, gaining valuable experience despite the disappointing scoreline against the European giants.

At just 19 years and 157 days, Ilenikhena reached his 15th Champions League appearance, breaking Kanu’s previous record of 19 years and 260 days. While the result was a painful one for the French side, the personal achievement underlined the rapid rise of one of Africa’s most exciting young forwards.

Ilenikhena’s Champions League journey began remarkably early. He made his debut in the competition at the age of 17 with Royal Antwerp, coming off the bench against Barcelona. That breakthrough season proved memorable, as he scored his first Champions League goal against the same opponents, netting a dramatic late winner in a famous 3-2 victory over the Catalan giants.

His move to Monaco only strengthened his reputation on Europe’s biggest stage. The teenager struck again against Barcelona, once more scoring the winning goal as Monaco claimed a 2-1 win. He later added a third Champions League goal to his tally that season, finding the net in a thrilling 3-3 draw with Benfica.

This season, however, opportunities in the Champions League have been more limited. Ilenikhena has featured in just three matches, accumulating only 51 minutes of action. Despite that, he has continued to make an impact across domestic competitions, scoring four goals in total: two in Ligue 1 and two in the Coupe de France.

Still only in his teens, Ilenikhena’s record-breaking achievement places him alongside some of Africa’s most celebrated names and highlights his steady progression at the highest level. While Tuesday night belonged to Real Madrid, it also marked another significant chapter in the unfolding story of a forward many believe is destined for even greater Champions League moments.
