Werder Bremen are considering a season-ending knee surgery for Victor Boniface as the Nigerian striker’s injury struggles continue, according to a report by German outlet BILD.

Boniface, who turned 25 on Tuesday, has endured a frustrating loan spell in Germany, managing just 326 minutes of action in the first half of the season and failing to complete a full 90 minutes in a Bremen shirt.

The striker has been sidelined by a bruised knee joint, an injury reportedly sustained in training shortly after Bremen’s North Derby loss to Hamburg (3–2) in early December. Although initially thought to be minor, the pain has persisted, forcing renewed discussions over his long-term fitness.

BILD reports that talks are ongoing between Werder Bremen and Bayer Leverkusen, where Boniface remains under contract until 2028, over the best course of action. Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes and Bremen’s Clemens Fritz are said to be working towards a joint decision before Christmas.

Doctors in Leverkusen are reportedly advising knee surgery, an option that was already considered last August. Boniface, who suffered two anterior cruciate ligament injuries in 2019 and 2020, had previously delayed the procedure before completing a swift loan move to Bremen.

Despite being declared fit at various points this season, the Nigeria international has reportedly never been fully pain-free.

Undergoing another operation would almost certainly bring Boniface’s season to an end, ruling him out of further appearances for Bremen. However, the report suggests surgery could offer the best chance of stabilising his knee issues and preserving his career at the top level.

Boniface had planned a private pre-season training camp in Marbella last summer in a bid to return in peak condition following a difficult end to the 2024/25 campaign, but lingering pain reportedly disrupted those plans and carried into the current season.

After discussions between both clubs, Rolfes is expected to speak with Boniface and his representatives to determine the next steps. According to BILD, the final decision rests with the player.
