Cyriel Dessers completes move to Panathinaikos from Rangers

Greek heavyweights Panathinaikos have officially announced the signing of Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers from Scottish Premiership side Rangers on a permanent transfer, Bold Sports reports.

The 30-year-old forward joins the 20-time Greek champions for an undisclosed fee, bringing an end to his amazing spell in Scotland. Dessers will don the number 33 jersey at his new club and is expected to fill the void left by Fotis Ioannidis, who recently completed a move to Sporting Lisbon.

Dessers, who arrived at Rangers in the summer of 2023, enjoyed an impressive stint at Ibrox, scoring 52 goals in over 100 appearances for the club. During his time in Glasgow, he won a League Cup, finished as the SPFL Premiership’s top scorer, and clinched the prestigious Sam English Bowl award.

Before his move to Scotland, the Nigerian international spent a season in Serie A with Cremonese, where he registered seven goals and two assists in 29 appearances. He also had a productive spell with Genk in the Belgian Pro League, scoring 11 goals and providing six assists in 43 matches.

Prior to his time in Belgium, Dessers had a memorable campaign during his loan spell at Feyenoord in the 2021–22 season, where he starred for the Dutch giants by netting 20 goals and supplying three assists in 41 outings across all competitions.

The striker’s journey in the Netherlands also includes prolific spells with Heracles, where he bagged 18 goals in a single season, FC Utrecht, where he scored 19 goals over two campaigns, and NAC Breda, where he produced an incredible 29 goals and 11 assists in 40 games.

For now, Dessers’ immediate focus shifts to the Super Eagles, having been named in Nigeria’s 23-man squad for the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Following the international break, he is expected to return to Greece and make his highly anticipated debut for Panathinaikos.
