Nigeria’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi made history by becoming the first African man ever to surpass the 22-meter barrier in the men’s Shot Put.

Competing at the Eugene Diamond League in Oregon, Enekwechi threw a massive 22.10m to set a new African Record and secure a well-deserved third-place finish.

The event, held at the iconic Hayward Field, saw a fiercely competitive field led by American powerhouse Joe Kovacs, who won with a world-leading mark of 22.48m. Kovacs, a two-time world champion and Olympic silver medalist, showcased his trademark explosive power to dominate the competition.

American Roger Steen narrowly edged Enekwechi for second place with a stunning personal best of 22.11m, achieved on his fifth attempt. Despite Enekwechi’s spirited effort to reclaim second place on his final throw — which measured 21.68m — the Nigerian star ultimately settled for third.

Since making his mark on the global scene in 2017, the U.S.-based Nigerian athlete, fondly nicknamed “Big Chuks,” has steadily carried the Nigerian flag in the Shot Put, breaking barriers and inspiring a new generation of African throwers.

His 22.10m mark not only cements him as Africa’s best-ever in the event but also places him firmly among the world’s elite, reaffirming Nigeria’s growing presence in global athletics beyond traditional track events.
