Nigerian striker Paul Onuachu scored his third Premier League goal this season after coming off the bench, but it wasn’t enough to save Southampton from a 2-1 loss to Wolves on Saturday.

Southampton were desperate to break their dismal home form, having lost eight consecutive league games at the St Mary’s Stadium. They also sought to avoid Derby County’s record-low 11-point Premier League haul.

The match against struggling Wolves presented an opportunity for Southampton to turn things around. However, the away side took control, scoring in the 19th minute through Jørgen Strand Larsen and doubling their lead just after halftime with the Norwegian’s second goal of the game.

Paul Onuachu’s introduction at halftime paid off when he scored in the 75th minute, but despite a late surge, Southampton couldn’t salvage a result, losing their ninth consecutive home league game and their 24th defeat.

The disappointing loss leaves Southampton at the bottom of the table with just nine points from 29 games. In contrast, Wolves’ crucial victory has helped them to establish a nine-point cushion above the relegation zone.

Southampton’s next challenge is another home game against Crystal Palace, while Wolves will host West Ham, seeking to build on their momentum.
