Kuti, Aiyelabegan named top seeds as 56th Molade Okoya-Thomas Cup enters day 3

National table tennis champions Matthew Kuti and Sukurat Aiyelabegan have been named the top seeds in the Men’s and Women’s Singles categories at the 56th Molade Okoya-Thomas Cup.

As the tournament enters its third day on Wednesday, January 29, Kuti, representing Lagos, leads a competitive field in the Men’s Singles event. He will face stiff competition from River’s Jamiu Ayanwale, Kwara’s Abdulbasit Abdulfatai, Edo’s Amadi Omeh, and defending champion Muiz Adegoke of Lagos.

In the Women’s Singles, Aiyelabegan of Kwara takes the No. 1 seed position in the absence of national champion Hope Udoaka of Cross River. She will compete against strong challengers, including Lagos’ Kabirat Ayoola, NSCDC’s Aminat Fashola, and nine-time champion Bose Odusanya.

Meanwhile, the preliminary rounds of the deaf and para events concluded on Tuesday, January 28, with Paris 2024 Paralympics medalist Isau Ogunkunle dominating his matches as he remains in contention for the title.

The Molade Okoya-Thomas Cup, Africa’s longest-running table tennis tournament, continues to attract the country’s top talents, promising high-intensity action as the competition progresses.
