Yira Sor seals dramatic 1-0 win for Genk over Charleroi

Yira Sor, the Nigerian striker, made a remarkable impact for KRC Genk as he emerged from the bench to clinch a 1-0 victory against Sporting Charleroi in a Belgian Jupiler League match on Friday night.

Despite having missed Genkโ€™s previous two league fixtures due to a muscle injury, Sorโ€™s entrance into the game in the 70th minute proved pivotal. With his first touch of the ball in the 71st minute, he found the back of the net, securing the crucial goal that granted the visiting team all three points.

Sor capitalized on a well-placed cross from his teammate Zakaria El-Ouadi, managing to sneak the ball past Charleroi goalkeeper Herve Koffi, who had put up an impressive performance throughout the match.

Reflecting on his performance, Sor expressed his satisfaction with the goal, stating, โ€œI’m a wing attacker, but I scored as a striker. The coach asked me to support Tolu. That worked out well,โ€ Sor told DAZN after the game.

Assessing the team’s performance, Sor highlighted their dominance and superior chances, emphasizing that the win was well-deserved. “We played well, were dominant, and had the best chances. It was a deserved win for us. That there was a lot of willpower? We played well offensively, defensively too. It was a little more difficult in the first half.”

Genk aims to secure a top-six finish in the regular season, which would guarantee them a spot in the championship playoffs. Following this victory, they currently sit in 5th place with 43 points from 27 games, just one point ahead of Gent in 6th place, with a game in hand.

Sor affirmed the team’s ambition, stating, “The goal is to reach the top six. These two victories in a row are good, and we look at it match by match.”

While Sor came on for Luca Oyen, his compatriot Tolu Arokodare was on for the entire duration of the game.
