The Nigeria Football Federation has shed more light on why in-form Nigeria striker Victor Boniface was not invited for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifying doubleheader against Guinea Bissau.
Nigerians had criticised head coach Jose Peseiro and the NFF for failing to invite one of the most in-form Nigerian strikers while players such as Kelechi Iheanacho and Paul Onuachu were invited despite their recent dip in form.
Nigeria lost the first leg 1-0 at home to the Djurus while they went away to claim a 1-0 win away from home in the return leg scoring the only goal of the match from the penalty spot.
However, the NFF in a tweet on Thursday has clarified why the Royale Union Saint-Gilloise was dropped for the AFCON qualifier.
“By way of clarification, Victor Boniface was not invited for the Super Eagles’ AFCON Qualifiers against Guinea Bissau. He was on the provisional list but didn’t make the final list, and therefore was not sent a flight ticket,” the NFF tweeted.
