The Super Eagles dropped to fourth place in Group C on Thursday after Benin Republic beat group leaders Rwanda 1-0 in a matchday three encounter played in Abidjan.
Douko Dodo grabbed the match-winner in the 37th minute for Benin Republic who now have four points from three matches, the same as group leaders Rwanda.
Rwanda only remains at the top by a better goals difference.
The Super Eagles thus dropped to fourth along with Lesotho and Zimbabwe with two points respectively going into Friday’s clash against South Africa at the Godswill Akpabio stadium.
The result, however, will favour either Nigeria and South Africa if their clash on Friday produces a winner.
Either side will go top of the group with if they record a win.
The three-time African champions will battle Benin next Monday evening in Abidjan in continuation of the World Cup qualifying series.
Benin Republic are currently coached by former Eagles coach Gernot Rohr who was sacked in 2022.
