Bayer Leverkusen Sporting Director, Simon Rolfes, says the signing of Victor Boniface has given the club in the long term, a strong and versatile striker who will take the German Bundesliga by storm.
Leverkusen announced the signing of the Nigerian on Saturday after reaching a deal worth €27.5m with Belgian Jupiler League side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise. The 22-year-old striker has signed a contract with the Werkself to 30 June 2028 and he will wear the number 22 shirt.
Reacting to the arrival of the striker who scored against them in the UEFA Europa League last season, Rolfes says they have been looking at the Nigerian for a while and their admiration of him increased after his performance against them last season.
“Victor Boniface has been on our radar for some time,” said the Leverkusen sporting managing director. “His performance against us absolutely confirmed our positive assessment,” Rolfes told the club website on the arrival of the Nigerian.
“Victor is a very commanding and difficult-to-handle centre forward who will be a challenge for every defender with his physicality. In addition, he is also quick and has good technique.
”Over the long term, we now have a strong and versatile striker with potential in our ranks. He will help us improve the quality of our squad for the large number of games in the Bundesliga, DFB Cup and the Europa League.”
Boniface says he is excited to get going with Leverkusen, “a special opportunity I definitely wanted to take up. I’ve already experienced the atmosphere here at the stadium and back then was able to assess the possibilities at this club,” said Boniface.
“After our talks I now know: This is a top club with a brilliant team. I’m really looking forward to playing football here and I want to play my part in the future success of Bayer 04.”
Boniface finished as joint-top scorer alongside Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford in the 2022/23 UEFA Europa League campaign with six goals in 10 games. He was also named in the competition’s official Team of the Season.
