The management of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has declared the playing surface at Umuahia Township Stadium, home to Abia Warriors, unfit for top-flight football. The facility also falls short of the league’s acceptable broadcast standards.

In a statement released on Monday, the NPFL confirmed that while Abia Warriors will not be banished from Umuahia, the club has been directed to urgently improve the quality of the pitch, install standard floodlights, and upgrade the dressing rooms at the stadium.

“The Umuahia Township Stadium playing surface has been deemed unfit and falls short of acceptable television standards due to poor maintenance,” the NPFL said.

“Abia Warriors must take immediate steps to improve the pitch, install standard floodlights, and provide a conducive dressing room or risk being moved to an alternative venue.

“The club is expected to complete these upgrades as soon as possible to meet #NPFL26 stadium requirements.”

The NPFL board also revealed that the Sani Abacha Stadium, home to Kano Pillars and Barau FC, has similarly failed to meet licensing standards.

According to the league, the pitch, dressing room facilities, technical benches, and floodlights at the stadium do not comply with the infrastructure criteria for club licensing.

“There is a need to install standard floodlights and upgrade the dressing rooms and technical benches to acceptable conditions,” the statement added.

“Kano Pillars and Barau FC have been instructed to carry out these upgrades without delay.”
