Tobi Amusan powers to third-straight national title

World record holder and World Champion Tobi Amusan lived up to expectations as she won her third straight national title in the women’s 100m hurdles at the National Trials organised by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin on Thursday.

Amusan who had earlier claimed the national title at the national trials in 2021 at Yaba College of Technology and in Benin in 2022, eased to victory without breaking a sweat in the final on the evening of the day one of the competition.

She crossed the line in a time of 12.70sec, far ahead of her closest competitor Faith Osamuyi who finished in second position in 13.90secs. Kemi Francis-Petersen was third in 14.14secs.

The 26-year-old who was competing on home soil for the first time since breaking the world record in Eugene, USA last year, had earlier had a smooth semi-final, where she jogged to the finish line to qualify for the final.

With her fourth win of the season, Amusan would hope to be in good shape for the 2023 World Athletics Championship holding in Budapest, Hungary between August 19 and 27.
