Brighton renew interest in Calvin Bassey

English Premier League side Brighton have again turned their attention to Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey who plays for Dutch side Ajax Amsterdam.

According to The Athletic, The EPL side who are playing in the Europa League next season after finishing sixth last season see Bassey as a possible alternative to Levi Colwill.

Bassey joined Ajax last season from Scottish side Glasgow Rangers and caught the attention of Brighton before the £18.7m.

“Signing a left-sided central defender who can also play at left-back to act as cover for Pervis Estupinan is a priority in the summer transfer window for Brighton.

“The Nigerian international fits into that profile as a possible arrival as the club step up their recruitment efforts,” The Athletic reported.

Chelsea rejected their £30 million bid for Colwill last month after the England under-21 international impressed on loan at the Amex Stadium last season, helping them finish sixth and qualify for the Europa League.

Colwill’s future at Stamford Bridge hinges on talks with new head coach Mauricio Pochettino.

He has two years of his existing contract to run. Chelsea offered a new deal in February, but the terms are unacceptable to Colwill and no fresh proposal has been made since.

More negotiations are expected to take place but Colwill will want to meet with Pochettino first to see how much he figures in his plans before considering another extension offer from Chelsea, if one is made.

Bassey has Champions League and Europa League experience with Rangers and Ajax. He scored once and provided five assists across 39 appearances for the Dutch club in all competitions last season.
