Nigeria’s Super Eagles B have been eliminated from the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) after a heavy 4-0 defeat to Sudan in their second Group D match on Tuesday in Zanzibar.
The result follows a 1-0 loss to defending champions Senegal in their opening game and confirms Nigeria’s exit from the tournament regardless of the outcome of their final group fixture against Congo in Dar es Salaam next week.
The loss is Nigeria’s joint-worst in CHAN history, equalling the 4-0 defeat to Morocco in the 2018 final.
Ikorodu City defender Leonard Ngenge endured a nightmare evening. His own goal in the 23rd minute put Sudan ahead, and just before half-time, he conceded a penalty for handball. Daiyeen converted from the spot to give the Falcons of Jediane a 2-0 lead at the break.
Sudan extended their dominance after the restart. Yagoub Omer scored twice in quick succession, first in the 55th minute after slicing through Nigeria’s defence, then in the 62nd with a spectacular strike that bounced in off the crossbar.
The defeat leaves Nigeria winless and goalless after two games, sparking criticism from fans and raising concerns about the team’s preparation and tactical approach.
Nigeria have now failed to progress from the group stage in back-to-back CHAN tournaments, intensifying pressure on the coaching crew and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to reassess the future of the home-based national team.
