Sporting Lagos’ hopes of remaining in the Nigeria Premier Football League suffered a huge setback after losing 2-1 to visiting Plateau United on Wednesday at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos.
Izuchukwu Chimezie gave the visitors an early lead in the 5th minute against the run of play, unsettling the home side and increasing the tension inside the stadium.
Bernard Mundi increased Plateau United’s lead in the 44th minute after a brilliant team play.
Sporting Lagos came into the second half rejuvenated but Plateau United’s defence remained resolute, however, in-form striker Jonathan Alukwu scored what proved to be a consolation goal in the 69th minute but several attempts to equalise the game was thwarted by the visitors resolute defence.
It is the first home defeat for Sporting Lagos this season and one that might hurt their chances of remaining at the top flight the most.
Sporting sare now 17th on the log with 43 points, level on points with 18th-placed Doma United who have a game in hand one behind Bayelsa United in 16th place with two rounds of matches to go.
