Sporting Lagos are clinging to survival in the Nigerian Premier Football League after a dramatic 2-2 draw away at Bayelsa United.
With just three games remaining in the season, the point was crucial for the Lagos side led by Abdullahi Biffo who has been saddled with the job of helping the team retain their top-flight status.
Last week, a home draw against Enugu Rangers and Akwa United’s win over Heartland pushed Sporting Lagos into the relegation zone.
The matchday 35 encounter against Bayelsa United started slow but came alive in the second half. Forward Jonathan Alukwu put the visitors ahead with a quick brace in the 65th and 68th minutes. However, Sporting Lagos couldn’t hold on for their first away win, as John Bassey responded with two goals of his own for Bayelsa United in the 73rd and 75th minutes.
Both teams pressed for a winner, but the defenses held firm after conceding two quick goals each.
While a win would have been ideal, this draw was enough to lift Sporting Lagos out of the relegation zone and into 16th place. Doma United now occupies the 18th and final relegation spot after their 3-1 loss to Heartland.
Bayelsa United, Doma United, Heartland and Gombe United are currently the bottom 4 in the relegation zone.
