Sporting Lagos have informed their passionate supporters, known as the “Noisy Lagosians,” that the team will compete in the Nigeria National League (NNL) next season.
This comes after their unfortunate relegation from the top-flight league. Sporting Lagos lost their final match 1-0 to Shooting Stars of Ibadan, while Bayelsa United secured a crucial away win to remain in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
There were rumors of a potential loophole. Beyond Limits, a team previously registered as a feeder club for Remo Stars and competing in the NNL, earned promotion to the NPFL. While founder Kunle Soname initially planned to allow Beyond Limits to play in the league, reports suggest he’s reconsidering and might sell the slot to the highest bidder. Heartland FC has reportedly shown interest.
Despite speculation of a possible purchase, Sporting Lagos has officially confirmed their participation in the NNL next season in a statement released to the media.
The statement reads in part, “And even though it didn’t end the way we would have loved, when we look back, we’ll know it was a part of the journey. And that you are an important part of that journey.
“For all your support, through big wins against the biggest Clubs in Nigeria, game postponements and on-field drama, nail-biting draws and frustrating losses. For keeping the Sporting flag flying all season long. Thank you!
“We couldn’t have asked for a better person to share this journey with. The next chapter in our story continues in the NNL next season.
“Before then, we’ll be in touch regarding everything you need to know, as we plan for the next season.”
