Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone says Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman can still improve his overall play and defensive work, even after his brilliant start to life with the Spanish side, Bold Sports reports.

Lookman scored his first La Liga goal in Atletico Madrid’s 4-2 victory over Espanyol on Saturday, making it his fourth goal for the club and his sixth goal contribution in six appearances since joining from Atalanta during the January transfer window.

In his post-match press conference, Simeone praised the Nigerian International for bringing more goals to the team, but he demanded more, adding that Lookman himself is eager and keen to improve.

“Above all, he contributes goals. In principle, more goals than playmaking. He can improve both his overall play and his defensive work; we need him to adapt to the team’s style of play, and I see him eager and keen to improve,” Simeone said.

“Since he arrived, he’s said he wants to improve as a footballer. His goal-scoring instinct isn’t a coincidence, and we need more of him in terms of overall play,” the tactician added.

After their much-needed La Liga victory, Atletico Madrid will quickly turn their attention to the UEFA Champions League as they host Club Brugge in the second leg of their knockout phase play-off clash on Tuesday.

Both sides served up a classic in the first leg of the tie with the game finishing 3-3. Lookman also found the net in that clash while his Super Eagles teammate Raphael Onyedika got a goal and an assist.

Speaking ahead of the game, Simeone assured that the fans will be behind the team as they look to seal a spot in the round of 16: “We need to focus our message internally to energize our people. And based on our style of play and energy, I have no doubt that our stadium will be behind us.”
