Highly-rated Nigerian tennis talent Seun Ogunsakin has won the African Junior Championship in Egypt, defeating Botswana’s Raguin Ntungamili in a thrilling final match.
The African Junior Tennis Championship, which commenced on April 15, features the continent’s leading under‑16 tennis players, who earn their spots through the ITF Junior Rankings.
Seun Ogunsakin, Nigeria’s only participant in the tournament, advanced to the final after beating Tunisia’s Darmoul Ahmed, the fourth seed, in straight sets with scores of 6-2 and 6-3.
Meanwhile, Raguin Ntungamili made an impressive run to the final, winning all his matches without losing a set. He secured his spot in the final by defeating El Aouni Reda in a hard-fought clash, claiming victory in straight sets of 7-6 (5) and 6-1.
However, Ogunsakin who was widely regarded as a top contender for the championship due to his position as the tournament’s number one seed and highest-ranked player, lived up to expectations by winning the title in commanding style.
Ogunsakin’s triumph at the African Junior Championships adds to his growing list of accomplishments, which includes a remarkable leap of 107 spots in the January world junior rankings, placing him at 183 globally, 12th in Africa, and the highest-ranked junior player in Nigeria.
