Nigeria Premier Football League title contenders Rivers United climbed to third place with two games in hand after securing a 1-0 victory over Kano Pillars in Port Harcourt, while Shooting Stars moved up to fifth following a hard-fought 1-0 win over Remo Stars in a Southwest derby in Ibadan.

David Sholumade scored the dramatic winner for Rivers United in the 90th minute, sending players, fans, and officials into wild celebration. This came despite the team being reduced to 10 men in the 84th minute after Isaac Annor was sent off.

The Pride of Rivers showed grit and resolve, ending their two-game winless streak, albeit from CAF Champions League fixtures.

Meanwhile, Shooting Stars compounded the woes of defending champions Remo Stars with a 1-0 victory in the rescheduled NPFL game in Ibadan, dropping Remo Stars to 13th on the table.

Ismail Ayodele headed home the decisive goal in the 34th minute but required treatment afterward following a collision with the Remo Stars goalkeeper. The win marks the sixth in 15 games for the Oluyole Warriors.

The defeat, Remo’s eighth of the season, leaves them eight points behind league leaders Ikorodu City.
