Rivers United coach, George Finidi, showcased his tactical superiority against his former assistant Yemi Olanrewaju, now in charge of Enyimba, by leading his side to a commanding 2-0 victory in Port Harcourt on Sunday.
This Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) clash, framed as a showdown between a master and apprentice, delivered a thrilling contest with Rivers United ultimately coming out on top.
Rivers United took control early on, with Ubong Friday breaking the deadlock in the 17th minute. His clinical finish that gave the home side a lead that set the tone for the rest of the game.
Enyimba, who came into the match unbeaten in the 2024/25 season, struggled to find their rhythm as Rivers United pressed high and dictated play.
Despite Enyimba’s attempts to claw their way back into the game, Rivers United’s defense, led by their experienced backline, stood firm, denying their opponents any clear scoring opportunities. Enyimba’s difficulties in Port Harcourt were further compounded by the fact that they haven’t scored a goal at this venue since 2018.
As the game wore on, it seemed like Enyimba might force their way back, but Rivers United dealt the final blow late in the match. In the 87th minute, Jackson Seiyefa scored the second goal to seal the victory for Rivers United. The win not only secured three valuable points but also ended Enyimba’s unbeaten run in all competitions this season.
The much-anticipated encounter lived up to expectations, with both teams battling for control in midfield and showing flashes of brilliance. However, it was Finidi’s tactical acumen and familiarity with his former assistant’s strategies that gave Rivers United the upper hand. His team’s well-organized defense and clinical finishing ensured they came out on top.
For Enyimba, the defeat continues their poor record in Port Harcourt, where they have struggled to break down Rivers United for several years. Coach Yemi Olanrewaju will need to regroup quickly as they aim to bounce back from this first loss of the season.
