Nigerian striker Rafiu Durosinmi continued his impressive form this season, scoring his fifth goal of the campaign to help Viktoria Plzen secure a 1-0 victory over Sigma Olomouc in their Czech league clash at the Doosan Arena on Saturday.
Plzen came into the fixture unbeaten in their last three matches and extended that run thanks to Durosinmi’s composed first-half finish. The striker received a neat pass from Cheick Souaré in the 30th minute before slotting into the bottom corner to give the hosts a deserved lead at the break.
Olomouc pushed hard for an equaliser after the restart but their challenge quickly unravelled. Defender Abdoulaye Sylla was shown a straight red card in the 58th minute, and ten minutes later Nigerian winger Abubakar Ghali followed him off after VAR upgraded his yellow card to a dismissal.
With the visitors reduced to nine men, Plzen dominated possession but failed to add to their advantage. Still, Durosinmi’s goal proved enough to seal all three points and stretch their unbeaten run to four games.
The result lifted Plzen to third in the standings on 15 points, while Olomouc remain sixth with 13. Plzen now turn their attention to a highly-anticipated showdown with league leaders Sparta Prague, while Olomouc look to bounce back against Teplice.
Durosinmi, who was the subject of transfer speculation during the summer transfer window, will look to maintain his impressive start to the season. The 22-year-old now needs just four more goals to equal his tally from last season.
