Paul Onuachu was the hero for Trabzonspor, scoring a brace to power the club to its 10th Turkish Cup title after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Konyaspor on Friday.

After finishing third in the Turkish Super Lig – won by Galatasaray for a fourth consecutive season – Trabzonspor knew lifting the Turkish Cup would be the perfect way to crown an impressive campaign.

Onuachu opened the scoring in the 17th minute, acrobatically slamming the ball into the back of the net. Just five minutes into the second half, Konyaspor drew level through Jackson Muleka.

Konyaspor had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 58th minute after being awarded a penalty, but Enis Bardhi struck the right woodwork. Onuachu then stepped up in the 79th minute, calmly converting from the penalty spot to seal the winner and complete his brace.

Onuachu has been Trabzonspor’s talisman this season, scoring 26 goals in 36 appearances across all competitions. He also finished as the joint top scorer in the Turkish Super Lig with 22 goals.

The former Southampton striker was not the only Nigerian celebrating the triumph, as fellow Nigerians Anthony Nwakaeme and Chibuike Nwaiwu were also part of the victorious Trabzonspor squad.

While Onuachu and Nwaiwu both played the full 90 minutes and were cautioned during the encounter, Nwakaeme was not included in the matchday squad.
