Osimhen contracts COVID-19, doubtful for AFCON

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen is doubtful for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations after testing positive for COVID-19.

Napoli announced Osimhen’s status on their website and Twitter page on Thursday.

The club however said that the striker who celebrated his 23rd birthday on Wednesday is asymptomatic and is undergoing self-isolation.

“Napoli has announced that Victor Osimhen has tested positive for Covid-19 but is asymptomatic. Dr. Tartaro was due to perform a check-up on the player tomorrow.

“Consequently, the local authorities have ordered that Osimhen self-isolate and the check-up will be rescheduled after he has tested negative and his period of isolation ends,” Napoli tweeted.

Osimhen has been out of action since fracturing his eye socket and cheekbone in Napoli’s 3-2 loss to Inter Milan on November 21.

He however had a successful surgery and has been training with a facial mask.

The striker has been included in Eagles interim coach Austin Eguavoen’s 28-man AFCON squad.

The AFCON starts on January 9 in Cameroon, with the Eagles filing out for the group opener against Egypt on January 11.
