The Nigeria Football Federation has appointed Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro as the new Super Eagles coach.
This was announced in a statement by the Communications Department of the NFF on Wednesday.
According to the NFF, interim coach Austin Eguavoen will take charge of the team, while Peseiro will observe.
“After careful consideration of a memo presented by Chairman of the Technical and Development Sub-Committee, the Executive Committee endorsed a proposal for the appointment of Mr Jose Peseiro as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles, following the end to the relationship with Mr Gernot Rohr.
“However, the Committee resolved that Mr Augustine Eguavoen, named the interim Head Coach, will lead the Super Eagles to the AFCON 2021 in Cameroon with Mr Peseiro only playing the role of Observer.
“It was unanimously agreed that the AFCON is a good avenue for Mr Peseiro to launch a working relationship with Mr Eguavoen, who will revert to his role as Technical Director (hence Mr Peseiro’s immediate boss) after the AFCON,” the NFF statement read in part.
Eguavoen was appointed Eagles interim coach after the NFF relieved Rohr as the national team coach.
Rohr had been in charge of the Eagles for over five years, but failed to lost against Central African Republic in 2022 World Cup qualifier and drew the last qualifying game against Lesotho also at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.
Peseiro’s first task as Eagles coach is to qualify the team for the 2022 World Cup.
Nigeria are among the 10 teams who have made it to the World Cup playoffs where five teams will make it to the mundial.
