Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika was in action as Club Brugge kicked off their new campaign in style, edging Union St. Gilloise 2-1 to lift the Belgian Super Cup on Sunday, Bold Sports reports.

The encounter, which traditionally signals the start of the new Belgian football season, saw Union aiming to defend the trophy they claimed last year with a 2-1 win over the same opponents.

Despite starting without Promise David, who was their top scorer last season, Union took the lead in the 15th minute through Franjo Ivanovic but Club Brugge responded in the 31st minute as Christos Tzolis converted from the penalty spot to bring the game level.

Club Brugge completed the turnaround just before the break when captain Hans Vanaken nodded home a corner delivered by Tzolis, making it 2-1. Although Union dominated possession after the break, they were unable to find an equaliser.

Onyedika delivered a strong performance across the full 90 minutes as he had the most tackles in the match (3), while recording an 89% pass accuracy, along with one clearance, five recoveries, and four ground duels won.

The Super Cup win marks Onyedika’s fourth trophy since joining Club Brugge, adding to his previous successes in the 2022–23 Super Cup, 2023–24 Belgian Pro League, and 2024–25 Belgian Cup.

With the first piece of silverware already secured, Club Brugge and Onyedika will be hoping to build momentum as they look to reclaim the league title, having narrowly missed out by three points last season. They begin their title quest against Genk on Sunday, July 27.
