Paul Onuachu opened his account in the Turkish Super Lig, scoring the decisive goal that handed Trabzonspor their first win of the season — a 1-0 victory over newly promoted Kocaelispor on Monday night.
The Nigeria international struck in the 49th minute with a well-placed header, which turned out to be Trabzonspor’s only shot on target in the match.
After a disappointing 2024/25 campaign, Trabzonspor were determined to start this season on a high. They began brightly in the first half, and although the deadlock wasn’t broken before the interval, their persistence paid off just four minutes into the second half.

Reflecting on the win, Onuachu said, “Playing here again and being here is a wonderful feeling for me. It was a great victory. We thank our fans. We were a bit tired in the second half, but it was a fantastic victory. We are very happy.”
Now working under a different manager from the one he played for during his loan spell last season, the 31-year-old praised new coach Fatih Tekke’s approach:
“Different coaches, different systems. The system we had with our previous coach was good, and the system we want to implement now is also very good. We need to reflect our coach’s desires on the field.”

Tekke, in turn, expressed satisfaction with the team’s resilience in the closing stages.
“Thank God we won. Winning today was our most important goal. In the first half, apart from a single passing mistake and Uğurcan’s save, our opponent had no chances. In the second half, when our pressure was broken, there were moments we didn’t want to see,” Tekke said after the game.
Teams like us shouldn’t concede positions from long balls and throw-ins. We were superior. Very superior. We got the victory we deserved, but we need to be better. We are a team capable of playing well.”
