Nigeria’s Super Eagles have dropped to sixth in Africa after falling four places to 30th in the latest FIFA men’s world ranking.

FIFA published its latest ranking on Wednesday, October 7, following the recent international window. Nigeria entered the period ranked 26th in the world and fourth in Africa. The latest update now places the three-time African champions behind Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, Algeria and Côte d’Ivoire.

Super Eagles suffer costly international window

Nigeria’s recent results played a major role in the decline. The Super Eagles began the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar in Uyo. George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor scored their first senior international goals in that match.

The team then suffered a 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in Bissau. Franculino Djú, Mama Baldé and Álvaro Djaló scored for the hosts. The result dealt a major blow to Nigeria’s ranking position.

Nigeria later returned to action against Russia in an international friendly. The Super Eagles played out a 3-3 draw in Nizhny Novgorod on October 6. However, the result could not fully offset the damage from the heavy defeat in Guinea-Bissau.

The latest ranking therefore leaves Nigeria five places below Morocco, Africa’s highest-ranked side.

Nigeria falls behind five African rivals

Morocco remain first in Africa and seventh in the world. Senegal occupy second place on the continent and 18th globally.

Egypt follow in third, with Algeria fourth and Côte d’Ivoire fifth. Nigeria complete the African top six.
