Josh Maja missed two penalties in three minutes but breathe a sigh of relief at the end of 90 minutes as Bordeaux thrashed Stade Lavallois 3-0 at the Matmut Atlantique to maintain their hopes of returning to the French Ligue 1.
Maja, Bordeaux’s top scorer this season was handed a golden opportunity to take Bordeaux 3-0 up in the 45th minute but the penalty was saved by goalkeeper Alexis Sauvage. The hosts were awarded another penalty kick three minutes into added time and Maja hoping to redeem his image fired the ball wide.
Despite Maja’s penalty misses, Bordeaux managed to maintain control of the game, thanks to the outstanding performances of their defenders and attacking midfielder. Stian Gregersen, Yoann Barbet, and Zurab Davitashvili all found the back of the net, securing a comfortable win for Bordeaux.
With this victory, Bordeaux now sits just two points behind league leaders Le Havre. However, Le Havre has a game in hand scheduled for Monday, May 22, against Valenciennes FC, which could potentially influence the title race.
Although Maja may have endured a rollercoaster of emotions during the match, his team’s overall performance and the final result provided a sense of relief. Bordeaux’s promotion hopes remain intact as they continue their pursuit of returning to the highly competitive French Ligue 1.
