Super Eagles winger Ademola Lookman expressed his satisfaction following Atalanta’s crucial 3-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk in the UEFA Champions League, where he played a key role in the team’s performance.
Lookman scored a goal and provided an assisted in the game and was rightly named the Man of the Match at the end of the 90 minutes of action.
Reflecting on the match in an interview with Sky Sports, Lookman emphasised the significance of the victory, most especially after a good performance in their first game at home which ended in a draw against Arsenal.
“I’m very happy with the victory. I think tonight’s victory was very important for us to make another step, stronger in Europe,” he said.
Highlighting the importance of building on their previous performance against Arsenal, the Ballon d’Or nominee said, “I think, especially after our first performance against Arsenal at home, we put on a good performance, and to build up on that tonight and to score the goals and win was very important for us going ahead into the next busy schedule that we have.”
He noted that the team was committed to continuous improvement in each game as they come, staring from their next Serie A game against Genoa on Saturday.
“Every performance, we try to build on. Today was a good performance, so we will build on that and look forward to the next game on Saturday at home against Genoa. Every game is important, and we’re looking forward to each game because it’s great to play a lot of games,” he added.
Additionally, Lookman expressed his gratitude to his teammates for helping him claim the the Player of the Match award.
“It’s always nice to receive these awards. I wouldn’t have been able to do that without the team, and the team had a good performance today,” he added.
Lookman was Atalanta’s standout performer in Europe last season, scoring a hat-trick in the final as they defeated unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 to win the Europa League.
