Katsina United ended the three-game unbeaten run of Remo Stars, defeating the Sky Blue Stars 2-0 at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium, Katsina, on Sunday.
Remo Stars coach Daniel Ogunmodede returned to the club after international duty with the Nigerian national team. He named goalkeeper Bankole Kayode as captain in the absence of Nduka Junior. Haruna Hadi started in midfield, while Ibrahim Shuaib was preferred over Sikiru Alimi to lead the attack.
The game remained goalless until the 50th minute, when a brilliantly struck free kick by Azeez Falolu beat Bankole Kayode to give the Dikko Warriors the lead against the table-toppers. They doubled their advantage in the 68th minute through a beautiful strike by Boslam Dawi.
In the 70th minute, Remo Stars introduced Samuel Anakwe, Sikiru Alimi, and Jabbar Malik to replace Seun Ogunribide, Michael Ibe, and ThankGod Ikeagwu, in an effort to stage a comeback. However, Katsina United defended resolutely to secure their victory.
The loss saw Remo Stars drop to second place, as Rivers United defeated Abia Warriors 1-0 to climb to the top of the table. Rivers United now have 25 points from 13 games, while the Sky Blue Stars remain on 23 points from the same number of matches.
Remo Stars have now failed to score in their last three league games. They have also managed only one win and one goal in their last five matches.
In their next fixture, Remo Stars will host Shooting Stars with the aim of rediscovering their form, bouncing back, and reclaiming the top spot. Meanwhile, Katsina United will visit Abia Warriors, hoping to continue their momentum.
