Josh Maja scores brace, focused on Ligue 1 promotion

Josh Maja scored a brace for Bordeaux in their 3-0 win over Grenoble Foot as they continued their push for promotion.

The win sees them return to second on the league table with six games untill the end of the season.

After their bright start to the game, Maja opened the scoring in the 42nd minute while Zurab Davitashvili made it 2-0 in the 57th minute. Maja ensured he put the game beyond the visitors when he grabbed the third goal in the 64th minute.

The brace takes his goals tally of the season to 15 making him the 4th Bordeaux player to score at least 15 league goals in a single season in the 21st century which includes Ligue 1 + Ligue 2 placing him alongside club greats such as Diego Rolan (15 in 2014/15), Fernando Cavenaghi (15 in 2007 /08) and Pauleta (23 in 2002/03 and 22 in 2001/02).

Reacting to his performance, the former Sunderland player who has been on the radar of Spanish teams in recent days says he is delighted with the result but the target for the team remains gaining promotion to the topflight.

“We had a good game, we are really happy with these three points. There are six games left, we hope to win them all. We got a lot of chances, it could be 3-0 at half-time. We kept trying to hurt the opponent,” the 24-year-old said after the win.

Bordeaux saw their promotion pursuit derailed when they lost 3-0 to fellow promotion contenders Metz last time out but Maja insists that they are only focused on themselves to win their next games.

“It was important to win today, but we think of us, not our opponents. We know that if we win all our matches, we will go up. You have to keep the same state of mind, follow the coach well, and play with confidence. That’s what will make the difference. If we play like today (Monday), we can do things well.”

Asked about his history making brace, Maja said, “I do not care. As I say in every interview, I just want to help the team and get back on track.”
