The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has nominated Edo Queens for the Women’s Club of the Year award.
The list of nominations was announced by CAF on Wednesday ahead of the 2024 awards billed for Rabat, Morocco next month.
Edo Queens nomination comes after an impressive outing at the ongoing CAF Women’s Champions League where they finished top of their group, defeating defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns in the process.
They were eventually defeated by TP Mazembe in the semi-final of the Continental tournament.
Earlier in the year, Edo Queens won their first-ever Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership title and were also crowned champions of the WAFU B Champions League Qualifiers after a commanding 3-0 victory over Ainonvi FC.
The Nigerian club was nominated for the continental award alongside seven other clubs including TP Mazembe (DR Congo), FC Masar (Egypt), CBE FC (Ethiopia), Asfar (Morocco), Aigles De La Médina (Senegal), Mamelodi Sundowns women (South Africa), and University of the Western Cape (South Africa).
Although they were eliminated in heartbreaking circumstances, Edo Queens would hope to follow in the footsteps of the Bayelsa Queens, who placed third in the 2022 edition of the Women’s Champions League.
Edo Queens forward, Emem Essien could also be in line for more recognition after the final on Saturday due to her outstanding performance in the tournament.
