Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos believes his team has all it takes to upset the Super Eagles of Nigeria in the semifinal of the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday at the Stade de la Paix, Bouake.
Broos would be hoping to lead South Africa to their first final appearance at the AFCON since lifting the trophy on home soil in 1996 but Nigeria stand in the way of their goal. Broos who led Cameroon to their fifth AFCON trophy in 2017 will be hoping to help South Africa reach the summit of African football.
The Belgian tactician cut a determined figure today while speaking during the pre-match press conference, acknowledging the challenge posed by Nigeria but insisting his team is ready to cause an upset on Wednesday.
“Yes, we know and understand who we are up against. We know the might of this team and that their players play all over Europe. We also know that last time in an AFCON what the result was, but this time it’s different. It’s different players, a different team, and a different AFCON. Anything is possible,” said the Belgian tactician.
The last time both countries met in an AFCON semis was in 2000 with Tijani Babangida’s brace sending Nigeria to the finals.
