Hamstring injury rules Thapelo Maseko out of Super Eagles clash

Bafana Bafana will be without forward Thapelo Maseko when South Africa face Nigeria’s Super Eagles in the semifinal of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday due to a hamstring injury.

Maseko who has featured in all of South Africa’s games at the competition scoring once, has been ruled out of the rest of the tournament as a result of the injury, according to head coach Hugo Broos.

“Sadly due to the third-degree tear (hamstring), Maseko is out for the rest of the tournament. But he remains with us till the end. We will not replace the player with another due to time (Visas and the travel time to get to Cote d’Ivoire at short notice), so we will continue the tournament with the squad we have,” Broos told Safa.net.

Maseko started in the opening loss to Mali but mostly came off the bench in subsequent matches against Namibia, Tunisia, Morocco, and Cape Verde. He scored his only goal against Namibia.

Apart from Maseko being ruled out, the team have no other injury concerns.
