Jessica Oji delivered another medal for Team Nigeria at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, producing a superb performance to claim silver in the women’s shot put final on Wednesday.
The 19-year-old, who switched her allegiance to Nigeria in February, enjoyed a dream International debut for the country, recording a best throw of 17.87m to finish second and secure a place on the podium.
Canada’s Sarah Mitton successfully defended her Commonwealth title with a winning throw of 19.88m, while Jamaica’s Lloydricia Cameron also threw 17.87m but settled for bronze.
India’s Manpreet Kaur finished fourth with 17.49m, Wales’ Adele Nicoll placed fifth with 16.33m, while Australia’s Marley Raikiwasa was sixth after throwing 16.13m.

Kenya’s Belinda Oburu finished seventh with 16.09m, Tonga’s Ata Maama Tu’utafaiva was eighth with 15.58m, Gabon’s Carine Bacchetta-Mekam placed ninth with 14.88m, South Africa’s Ashley Erasmus finished 10th with 14.83m, and Samoa’s Nu’u Tuilefano came 11th with 14.45m.
Oji’s silver medal is a landmark achievement, making her the first Nigerian woman to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the shot put since Vivian Chukwuemeka claimed gold at the 2006 Games in Melbourne.
It also means that Team Nigeria have now secured 14 medals at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games (seven gold, five silver and two bronze) as the country’s impressive campaign continues.
