Gift Orban joins Lyon on a four-and-a-half-year deal

Nigerian striker Gift Orban has joined Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyon from Belgian Jupiler club KAA Gent on a four-year deal.

The six-time Ligue 1 champions reportedly paid Gent €12 million for the Nigerian who had an explosive campaign in the 2022/23 season where he found the back of the net 20 times in 22 appearances.

“The amount of the transfer amounts to €12 million to which can be added a maximum of €8 million in bonuses as well as 20% profit-sharing on the added value of a possible transfer,” the club wrote in a statement.

The 21-year-old was officially announced by the club on Thursday, after completing his medicals earlier in the day.

Despite the high number of Nigerian players who have featured in the French top flight such as Stephen Keshi, Jay Jay Okocha, Victor Osimhen, John Utaka, Taribo West, and a host of others, Orban would become the first Nigerian to play for Lyon.

Orban hopes to feature in his first competitive game against Rennes on January 26. He is ineligible to play against Bergerac Perigord in tomorrow’s French Cup round of 16 encounter.
