Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have sealed their place in the semifinals of the WAFU B U20 Boys Tournament with a dominant 4-1 victory over Benin Republic on Sunday.

Following a 1-1 draw in their opening game against Ghana’s Black Satellites, the Flying Eagles were in search of their first win of the competition as they faced a determined Benin side.

Benin took a shock lead in the 22nd minute through Junior Olugbade, who curled in a superb free-kick beyond Nigerian goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt to stun the Flying Eagles.

Nigeria responded with relentless pressure and were rewarded just before halftime as Divine Oliseh set up Abdullahi Mohammed inside the penalty area, and the Kwara United striker netted his second goal of the tournament to restore parity in the 39th minute.

The Flying Eagles came out firing in the second half and took the lead almost immediately with Anthony Kpangu pouncing on a loose ball in the box and finishing clinically to put Nigeria in front.

Aliyu Zubairu’s side put the result beyond doubt with two late goals as Imrana Muhammad scored his first of the tournament before a heavy deflection led to a fourth in the closing stages.

With the victory, Nigeria are now through to the semifinals, while Benin must defeat hosts Ghana in their final group game to stand a chance of progressing.
