Super Falcons forward Esther Okoronkwo has won AFC Toronto’s Player of the Month award for September, following a string of outstanding performances that propelled her club to the inaugural Supporters’ Shield in the National Soccer League (NSL).
Okoronkwo was at the heart of Toronto’s success throughout the month, playing a decisive role in key matches that defined their season. She scored the only goal in a 1–0 victory over Halifax, before delivering a dazzling performance against Vancouver, where she scored twice and provided an assist in a commanding 7–0 win.
The forward maintained her fine form in the reverse fixture against Halifax, once again finding the net to secure a 1–1 draw for Toronto. She rounded off a remarkable month by assisting the only goal in another 1–0 win over Ottawa as her side clinched top spot in the NSL regular-season standings to make history as the first-ever Supporters’ Shield winners and the first team to qualify for the playoffs.
Okoronkwo’s club heroics come on the heels of her exceptional international performances at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where she played a starring role in Nigeria’s record-extending 10th continental title.
She was particularly instrumental in the Super Falcons’ knockout-stage success, providing two assists and a goal in the quarterfinal win over Zambia, setting up the late winning goal in the semifinal against South Africa, and contributing a goal and an assist in the comeback victory over Morocco in the final.
With her confidence at an all-time high, Okoronkwo will now look to carry her scintillating form into the playoffs, as AFC Toronto aim to complete their fairy-tale season with another piece of silverware.
