Nigeria’s Ella Onojuvwevwo produced the performance of her career on Saturday, storming to a personal best 49.47 seconds to win the women’s 400m at the Lone Star Grand Prix in Texas.
The 20-year-old continued her remarkable progression in the one-lap event, improving on her previous lifetime best to claim victory ahead of Jamaica’s Stacey Ann Williams, who clocked a season’s best 49.80s, while American Alexis Holmes finished third in 50.42s.
Onojuvwevwo’s winning time was her second career sub-50-second performance and further established her among the world’s elite quarter-milers.
The performance also elevated her up the record books, making her the fourth-fastest Nigerian woman in history and the sixth-fastest African woman ever over the distance.
