Valencia head coach Carlos Corberán was full of praise for Super Eagles striker Sadiq Umar, after his winning goal helped the Spanish side secure a crucial 2-1 victory over Real Valladolid in their La Liga clash on Saturday.
Sadiq Umar carried his momentum from previous games into the match against Real Valladolid, having scored three goals in his previous three appearances. He continued his impressive form, contributing to Valencia’s first goal before scoring the winner in the 58th minute.
The victory was a significant one for Valencia, as it lifted them out of the relegation zone with 27 points from 27 games. They now hold a one-point advantage over 18th-placed Deportivo Alaves, and with 11 games remaining, Sadiq Umar’s goals have given Valencia a chance to secure safety.
In his post-match press conference, Carlos Corberán expressed his delight with having three quality strikers, praising Sadiq Umar’s performance: “Luckily I have three great strikers, because Sadiq is showing it, Hugo has shown it but right now he’s not in the condition to play, same as Rafel Mir. I have absolute full confidence in the three strikers that we have.”
Corberán also drew parallels between Sadiq Umar’s performance and the team’s overall display: “I think Sadiq exemplified how the game went for us. A game with mistakes in some moments but with the mentality to recover from those situations, of not losing faith, until achieving the objective. I think there is a similarity in what Sadiq did during the match and what the team has done,” he stated.
With their winless run ended and safety looking possible, Valencia will aim to maintain their momentum when they face Girona in their next La Liga clash on March 15.
Sadiq Umar, who has now scored five goals for Valencia, surpassing his tally of four goals in two and a half seasons with Real Sociedad, will look to continue his goal-scoring form as he aims to reestablish himself as one of the top strikers in Spain.
