Nigeria’s sole representative at the 2022/23 CAF Confederation Cup group stage, Rivers United on Sunday suffered a 3-0 humbling in the hands of Republic of Congo’s CSMD Diables Noirs at the Stade Alphonse Massamba-Debat in Brazzaville.
The hosts hit the visitors with three quick goals to earn their first win of Group B and go top of the log. Carl Wunda Ngana opened the scoring for Diables Noirs in the 30th minute and before the visitors could regain themselves, Jaures Ngombe made it 2-0 in the 32nd minute while Domi Juares Massoumou made it 3-0 in the 37th minute.
The 2021/22 Nigeria Professional Football League champions regained themselves but it was too late to mount a comeback but only to settle their defensive frailties as they held the scoreline to just 3-0.
The Nigerians will welcome Ivory Coast’s ASEC Mimosas to the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Igwuruta for their second group game on Sunday February 19, and will be hoping to get a win to salvage their campaign.
ASEC who will be looking to grab their first group win in the fixture were forced to a goalless draw by visiting Motema Pembe from DR Congo.
