Nigeria’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi needed just one throw to secure his place in the men’s shot put final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Wednesday.
Competing in Group B of the qualification round, Enekwechi registered 20.03m with his opening attempt to meet the automatic qualifying standard and book his place in Thursday evening’s final.
The 33-year-old topped Group B with the mark ahead of India’s Samardeep Singh Gill (19.95m), Australia’s Nick Palmer (19.92m), South Africa’s Aiden Smith (19.86m) and Mauritius’ Bernard Baptiste (15.91m), who also progressed to the final.
In Group A, New Zealand’s Tom Walsh led the qualifiers with a throw of 21.03m, while India’s Tajinderpal Singh Toor (20.14m) and England’s Scott Lincoln (20.09m) also surpassed the 20-metre mark.

Cyprus’ Petros Michaelides (18.70m), British Virgin Islands’ Djimon Gumbs (18.49m), Nauru’s Jonathan-Deiwea Detageouwa (16.84m) and Tonga’s Penisimani Taeiloa (14.94m) completed the list of finalists after all seven athletes from the group advanced.
Enekwechi will be aiming to add another Commonwealth Games medal to his collection after claiming silver at the 2018 Gold Coast Games. On that occasion, he produced a personal best throw of 21.14m but finished behind Walsh, who won the gold medal.
The Nigerian will now hope to improve on that result and further boost Team Nigeria’s medal haul when the final takes place on Thursday evening.
Team Nigeria currently occupy fifth place on the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games medal table with 12 medals comprising six gold, four silver and two bronze.
