Super Eagles midfielder Chrisantus Uche kicked off the new season in fine form, scoring and assisting to inspire Getafe to a 2-0 victory over Celta Vigo in their La Liga opener on Sunday, Bold Sports reports.

The Nigerian international, who impressed last season with four goals and six assists for Getafe, picked up right where he left off by playing a decisive role in both goals as his side claimed a valuable away win.

Although Celta controlled much of the first half, Getafe held firm defensively and kept their clean sheet intact. Their resilience paid off shortly after the restart when Uche set up Adrian Liso, who marked his first-ever La Liga appearance with a well-taken finish.

Uche then turned scorer in the 72nd minute, showcasing his strength to shrug off his marker before calmly slotting home after rounding the goalkeeper, sealing the three points in emphatic fashion.

Chrisantus Uche’s standout display carried historical weight. According to OptaJose, he became the first Getafe player to score and assist in a league match since he last achieved the feat against Real Sociedad in January 2025. He also became just the second Getafe player to do so on Matchday 1 of a La Liga season, following Riki against Espanyol back in 2005.

The result sees Getafe climb to third place in the early standings, while Celta Vigo drop to 18th after a disappointing start. Up next, Getafe will visit Sevilla, while Celta look to bounce back against Mallorca.
