Moneke, Ireogbu, Ojeleye lead the way in defeats
Nigerian forward Chimezie Metu made a splash in his Liga ACB debut for FC Barcelona Bàsquet, leading the team to a convincing 91-65 victory over Granada. Metu showcased his scoring prowess, finishing with a team-high 17 points.
The former NBA player, who joined Barcelona on a one-year deal, was efficient from the field, going 2-for-2 (100%) from three-point range, 4-for-6 (66%) from two-point range, and 3-for-3 (100%) from the free-throw line. His impressive performance helped set the tone for Barcelona’s dominant win.

Moneke Falls Short in Baskonia Loss
Another Nigerian-born forward, Chima Moneke, faced a tougher challenge in his team’s season opener. Despite scoring a game-high 20 points, Moneke’s efforts were not enough to prevent Baskonia’s 88-80 loss to Tenerife.
Moneke has been a key contributor to Baskonia’s success and will be eager to help the team bounce back in their next Liga ACB game against MoraBanc Andorra on October 5th. Before that, he will also participate in Baskonia’s EuroLeague opener against Partizan Belgrade on October 3rd.
Ojeleye shines despite Valencia defeat
Semi Ojeleye, another Nigerian-born player, had a mixed outing in Valencia Basket’s season-opening loss to Manresa. Ojeleye scored 19 points but was unable to prevent Valencia’s 77-73 defeat.
Despite his individual performance, Ojeleye will be looking to help Valencia improve as they aim for their first win of the season.
Ireogbu’s Team Falls in Season Opener
D’Tigers guard Ike Ireogbu’s side, Basquet Girona, suffered a 90-73 defeat to Unicaja in their season opener. Ireogbu led Girona with 16 points but was unable to prevent the loss.
The defeat leaves Girona 15th in the standings, and they will be looking to bounce back with a win against Manresa, who defeated Valencia in their season opener.
