Calvin Bassey scored his maiden Dutch Eredivisie goal in Ajax’s 4-2 win at FC Volendam on Saturday to go top of the league, two points ahead of AZ Alkmaar who plays Utrecht on Sunday.
It was a perfect response for the Nigeria international who has been under strong criticism by fans and pundits after the team’s 6-1 home thrashing in the hands of in-form Napoli in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday.
Bassey found the back of the net in the 39th minute after captain Dusan Tadic had given the visitors the lead from the penalty spot in the 17th minute. Brian Brobbey and Davy Klaassen were also on the score sheet for the defending champions. Carel Eiting and equincio Zeefuik were the scorers for Volendam who sit bottom of the table.
The 22-year-old who joined the Sons of the Gods in the summer from Scottish side Glasgow Rangers has made seven league appearances recording a goal and an assist.
Bassey failed to score a single goal for Rangers in the 2021/22 season despite playing a total of 50 games in all competitions for the Gers.
